I am emailing regarding a conversation that you had with our director Brenda Goldberg.
She mentioned that you were keen to research the case of Herbert Braham Woolf, of the London Regiment, reported missing in Ypres on 26 October, 1917.
I have researched our records on this individual. The information we have is that his home address was 128 Wheeler Street, Birmingham, and that he enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, The London Regiment and was given the service number G/68446. His final rank was that of Private.
I hope this is of help to you. Please do let us know of any other requests for information that you may have.

Dear Daniel,
A Private is the starting rank in the British army; according to the British Army website:
“Private
On completion of Phase 1 Training, all new soldiers start as Privates although the title may be Trooper, Gunner, Signaller, Sapper, Guardsman Rifleman or even Kingsman depending on Corps/Regiment.”
According to the British Jewry Book of Honour – published after World War One and containing a full list of any Orders and Decorations received – no such award was given to this individual.
The only address we have for Pte Woolf is that he came from 128 Wheeler Street, Birmingham. This is presumably where he was living before he became enlisted in the London Regiment. I have found no record of his birth.
I hope that is of help.
